How to look after you violin/viola

Daily clean

After playing, use a dry lint-free cloth or duster to remove any rosin dust from the strings. Gently clean the front of the instrument, paying attention to the areas under the strings and fingerboard.

Adjusting your bow

A pencil should pass freely between the middle of the stick and the hair when tightened. Always loosen the hair after playing to avoid overstretching.

Apply rosin two to three times a week, rosining the full length of the bow in both sections and full sweeps. Replace cracked or old rosin, as this can damage the bow hair.

Bows may require repairing once the hair becomes loose or dirty and no longer able to hold rosin.
